Peter Gabriel 4 (PG4)

Post by YNWaN »

One of the albuns Andrew brought with him on his recent visit was '4' by Peter Gabriel. I was really taken with it so promptly set about acquiring a copy for myself. I noticed that on the Peter Gabriel website (https://store.realworld.co.uk/store/pet ... ble-vinyl/) there are a number of vinyl reissues and 4 is available as a half speed remaster on two 45rpm records:

If you follow the above link there is an interview with the mastering engineer David Lord in which he claims that the remastered record is actualy better, in parts, than the original master!

Anyway,it's just been delivered so we shall see in a bit, once I've had a chance to listen :).

Well I've just listened to the album and this is a fantastic recording, super silent surfaces, terrific dynamics and amazing bass speed and slam (this is through the RSL pre-amp). My one gripe would be that it's not the flattest of pressing - it's a long way from being un-playable but I've got a lot of flatter records.

No idea why but I’ve just listened to this just now for first time in years! It’s the Japanese OBI copy I took to Marks all that time ago.
The tension in the songs is absolutely palpable, if you zone in and listen to the whole thing it’s an emotionally shattering experience, in a good way.
